the tip
recently, i was having a couple of quiets after work when i was asked where i lived. i explained i lived in the 'newer area of newlands'. i was then asked if my house was 'near the tip'? and i said, 'yeah, we have a great view of the tip -- it is right below us. there's a house being built in between us at the moment. but it won't block our view of the tip'.
it wasn't until a few weeks later that i discovered in kiwiland that 'the tip' is actually 'the dump'. i just assumed what they meant was the tip at the end of the long-windy road below us overlooking the harbour (i mean, what else could it mean?). they are selling plots of land down there, and building houses left and right. there is now a house which occupies the tip. well, my tip, not the smelly dumpy kind of tip.
