vogels

vogels is a new zealand tradition. it's whole grain bread, sliced (or not), that is by far the best store-bought bread ever. you can't come close to buying anything like it in the states, unless you go to a bakery. i've just taken the "make your own" test on the vogels' website. the results are below:

i prefer the bread very toasted, or fresh (just bought) out of the bag. however, the latter option only lasts the day of purchase. afterwards, i rely on the good 'ol toaster. my favourite two 'vogels combos' are as follows: 1) marmite and butter and 2) cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato and avocado (can't beat that one any time of day).

vogels is so good that i brought my mom four loaves home for mother's day (when i was in nyc a month ago for work). she was ecstatic. it's good stuff i tell you. i also brought her some marmite. "it is made from brewer's yeast that's been used to ferment sugars into alcohol" (that's straight from their website). hard to describe but very delicious. marmite also has very high content in vitamin b. the bread spread is actually british, the kiwi version is vegemite, but i prefer the former. probably because mark does (he was born in the UK so grew up with it), which is now what i've grown used to eating. you can't like both.
