tricky treat
halloween is such a non-event in nz. i'd guess it was just my neighbourhood, but it's actually most everywhere in nz. last year i bought a whole bunch of candy (mark said no one would come and he was right), and i think we got three trick or treaters in our first visit, followed by maybe two in our second (for a total of a measly five). so we didn't hand out much, and i ended up eating the candy eventually. however, this year it was even more of a non-event. i've been so busy working that i barely even thought about it. although i did joke to a workmate that i'd wear my fairy wings in. don't ask me why, but i have my wings and headband (with antennae) from my last halloween in nyc. a bit of nostalgia for you. we had one long trick-or-treater (who's mom stood in the street) who had a "nail" through his head, and we scrambled to find him something finally deciding on a mini bag of cheesey rice cakes. yup, sure our house was the kid's score for the evening ...
i wished i had been back in newton for the holiday, because kya informed me that veritek (yes, the veritek hung outside his home (thanks to a suggestion from his seven year old daughter) and handed out candy and signed autographs. he made so many young children's evenings. i mean, imagine going out to trick 'o treat and bumping into a red sox legend (a captain who just won the world series, at that). a halloween dream come true.
